Many parents select Mohawk both because of our particular expertise with very young children and because every Little Camp group is led by an experienced preschool teacher.
Mohawk has created enriching experiences for three and four-year-old campers. Parents place a singular trust in camp when they send their children, and Mohawk’s remarkable staff, led by School Director Kim Ross, provides warmth, understanding and support so both Little Campers and their parents feel secure. Understanding that camp can represent a set of “firsts”— from riding a bus to learning to swim— we work with families to create a gentle transition into Mohawk’s world of friends, fun and discovery.
Mohawk Country Day School teachers, with their extensive expertise with young children, act as both Head Counselors and Activity Specialists. They are joined by a hand-picked group of preschool teachers from our area, as well as a team of General Counselors selected for their warmth and maturity. Mohawk is proud that our Little Camp offers child-to-staff ratios of better than 3:1.
Little Camp’s staff, facilities and activity centers are separate from those of older campers and built “just for them.” They include shallow developmental swimming pools where children can comfortably stand, smaller-scale sports fields, preschool crafts, junior gymnastics, a nature center with countless creatures and a farm complete with goats, sheep, alpacas and pony rides! Little Campers also have their own special dress-up days, scavenger hunts, flag raising ceremonies, pow-wows and a separate Carnival.
Every summer, our Specialists create activities designed for the abilities and attention spans of three- to five-year-olds. During carefully paced days that balance physical and creative activities with both structured and imaginative play (and, of course, story, rest and snack times), preschoolers thrive at Mohawk.
