American Red Cross Certified Swim Instruction

Mohawk’s swim program sets us apart from all other camps. Highlights of our program include 8 heated swimming pools and nearly 100 Red Cross Certified Swim staff members who are teaching the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. At Mohawk, we combine a supportive teaching philosophy with unparalleled expertise. Because we offer daily instructional swim, our campers make tremendous progress throughout the camp season, and each is encouraged to progress at his or her own pace.

Success in learning to swim depends on a child’s comfort and security level as well as the quality of the teaching. Our swim program follows the highly respected American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. This skill-based swim program is designed to help develop water safety, survival, swimming skills and stroke development. Each swim level has a defined set of skills that campers will learn. We will share details about the swim progress your camper makes, throughout the camp season!

More than 70 Red Cross certified Teaching Lifeguards, including 20 certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructors, partner with our Head Counselors and General Counselors to provide instruction tailored to each camper’s needs and ability level. Head Swim Instructors regularly evaluate each camper and build a plan with his or her instructor that includes concrete goals for development. Through small-group instruction, our campers – from those who come to us afraid of the water to experienced swimmers – make outstanding progress.

Campers are placed in small swim groups at the start of camp based on their abilities as determined by a Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor. Remember, campers often need time to shake off the “winter swim rust,” and many will change their swim group during the summer.

Having eight pools enables Mohawk to place every camper in water that is just the right depth.  And keeping the water at a balmy 87 degrees means that every child is eager to swim! Campers swim twice daily, with most of the morning and half of the afternoon periods dedicated to instruction. And the rest of the time? Free swim, games, inflatables, swim noodles, our arching hydraulic sprayer and amazing water slides, complete the incredible Mohawk swim experience!

Our Senior Campers not only improve their strokes through quality instruction but also have other swim opportunities through our Senior Electives program. The electives include water aerobics, water polo and Junior Lifeguarding (formerly Guardstart) which is a Red Cross Pre-Lifeguarding course that helps campers develop lifeguarding course prerequisites.
